Our project
In the summer 2022, we talked to 23 people in Berlin and asked them about their understanding of mental health. For us, addressing mental health was a way of investigating the fundamental aspects of living together. We especially wanted to learn about how mental health relates to social inequalities in the city.
Our questions touched on three areas:
❶ The definitions and conceptions of mental health.
❷ The relationship between social inequalities and mental health in Berlin.
❸ The ways of engaging with mental health, through different forms of treatment, care, and solidarity.
Who we are
We are Nassim Mehran and Margareta von Oswald. We initiated and conceptualised this visual research project. With the help and support of our advisory board Lee Modupeh Anansi Freeman, Kim Wichera, and Ulrike Kluge, we developed the project’s research design and questions, and selected conversation partners. Our selected conversation partners included professionals working in clinical work, policy-making, cultural and social work, advocacy, urban planning, and research. In collaboration with the film production team, Franziska Anastasia Lentes and Jan Stöckel, we produced, filmed, and edited the conversations. The conversations are archived in their full length and available upon request in Das Feministisches Archiv FFBIZ.
How this project came about
This project is part of Mindscapes, an international cultural programme funded by the Wellcome Trust that aims to support a transformation in how we understand, address and talk about mental health. Berlin Conversations on Mental Health is informed and inspired by Wellcome’s mental health programme, and was developed in collaboration with the Berlin University Alliance. Nassim is affiliated with Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, Margareta is affiliated with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
